The Jigawa State Government will distribute more than 400 tractors and 60 combine harvesters to farmers from November 2026 as part of efforts to boost mechanised farming and food production in the state.
The Director-General, Jigawa Agricultural Transformation Agency (J-AGRO), Dr Saifullahi Umar, disclosed this in Gumel while speaking at a programme organised by the Association of J-AGRO Workers in the state.
The programme also featured the empowerment and sensitisation of more than 550 women on poultry farming, backyard gardening, tree planting and other agricultural activities.
Umar said the planned distribution of farm machinery was part of the government’s broader agricultural transformation agenda aimed at improving productivity and expanding farmers’ access to modern equipment.

He said the state had already distributed more than 12,000 solar-powered water pumps to farmers and supported over 50,000 rice farmers.
According to him, the government has also established 60 farm mechanisation centres across the state, while the procurement of more than 400 tractors is expected to strengthen mechanised farming.
He said the government would also consider the contribution of J-AGRO workers to the state’s agricultural transformation efforts.
Speaking on the women’s empowerment programme, the Secretary of the Association of J-AGRO Workers, Aminu Musa, said the initiative was designed to complement the government’s agricultural development efforts.
He said the beneficiaries received training and mentorship in poultry farming, backyard gardening, tree planting and soilless hydroponic farming.
Musa said the programme was funded through monthly contributions by members of the association, adding that the workers were also appealing to the state government to consider their request for permanent and pensionable appointments.
The organisers said the training was aimed at helping the women become self-reliant, create sources of income and contribute to food production and food security.
Some of the participants commended the initiative, saying the skills acquired would enable them to establish small agricultural businesses and generate income.
The development comes as Jigawa continues to place agriculture at the centre of its economic development strategy, with emphasis on mechanisation, irrigation, skills development and increased food production.
