INEC to introduce real-time tracker for 2027 election preparations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will introduce a real-time tracker to monitor its preparations for the 2027 General Election across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Monday, September 7, 2026, while opening a two-day strategic workshop for Administrative Secretaries at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.
Amupitan said the workshop would produce a standard Excel-based operational tracker for Administrative Secretaries. The system will be connected to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre dashboard and the Election Project Plan.
He explained that INEC previously had no uniform system for monitoring the operational responsibilities of Administrative Secretaries.
According to him, the new tracker will give Resident Electoral Commissioners, Supervising National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission and the headquarters immediate information on the distribution of election materials, training of ad hoc staff and the level of preparedness in each state.
“This will enable us to move from reactive responses to proactive management,” he said.
Amupitan said the tracker would continue to be used after the 2027 election as part of INEC’s operational and onboarding system for Administrative Secretaries.
He added that the initiative comes as the National Register of Voters is nearing 100 million registered voters.
The workshop is focusing on five major areas: Continuous Voter Registration, logistics and materials management, electoral technology, optimisation of ad hoc staff and financial compliance.
The INEC chairman said the commission was using lessons from recent off-cycle elections, including the Osun State governorship election, where he said logistics and technology performed effectively.
He said INEC wants to achieve the same level of efficiency across the country ahead of the 2027 election, which is about six months away.
