Ikeja Electric Warns Customers Against Unauthorised Electrical Workers

Ikeja Electric Plc has warned customers against hiring unauthorised electricians to work on its power network, following recent incidents in which unsafe electrical activities reportedly led to fatalities.

The electricity distribution company issued the warning during its September Virtual Stakeholder Engagement, a monthly forum where it provides customers with updates on operations, safety and service-related matters.

Speaking during the session, the company’s Head of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment, Olaniyi Olayiwola, urged customers not to allow unqualified individuals to climb Ikeja Electric poles, work on power lines, tamper with electrical installations or carry out illegal connections.

Olayiwola said some recent accidents had resulted in deaths involving individuals who attempted to perform unauthorised activities around the company’s network.

He advised customers who notice unsafe electrical activities to report them to Ikeja Electric rather than attempting to intervene themselves.

“Please do not engage electricians to climb Ikeja Electric poles. If you see someone carrying out unsafe activities around our infrastructure, kindly report to us,” he said.

He also urged residents and communities to maintain sufficient clearance around high-voltage power lines, noting that encroachment on electricity infrastructure and inadequate right-of-way remain significant safety concerns.

The virtual engagement also featured updates on the company’s metering programme, including new meter prices and the ongoing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) refund process.

Ikeja Electric explained that eligible customers who had previously paid for their meters would receive refunds through credits applied to their electricity vending transactions during the approved refund period.

Customers can check their refund status online using their meter or account number. The refund dashboard displays details including the meter cost, number of refunds, monthly refund amount, total refund received and the date of the most recent refund.

The platform also provides the applicable refund token, which is sent to the customer’s registered telephone number or email address.

Customers experiencing difficulties with their MAP refunds were advised to contact Ikeja Electric through its official complaint channels or visit the nearest undertaking office.

The company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kingsley Okotie, also encouraged customers to rely on Ikeja Electric’s official communication and complaint platforms for accurate information and prompt resolution of complaints.

He said the company’s engagement with customers was aimed not only at providing information but also at ensuring that customers had the necessary knowledge and channels to remain safe and resolve service-related concerns.

The September engagement highlighted Ikeja Electric’s continued focus on electrical safety, customer education, transparency and stronger engagement with communities across its network.
