Grammy-Winning Jazz Legend Cassandra Wilson Dies At 70

Grammy Award-winning American jazz icon Cassandra Wilson has died at the age of 70.

Wilson passed away on Wednesday, in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, according to her manager, Robert Torre, who described her as a “legendary jazz artist” who “transitioned peacefully at home, surrounded by family, close friends, and her manager.”

The cause of her death was not disclosed, while her family has requested privacy.

A celebrated singer-songwriter and producer, Wilson was widely regarded as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz, renowned for her rich, expressive contralto and her ability to blend jazz with blues, folk, R&B and other musical traditions.

Her illustrious career, which spanned more than three decades, earned her two Grammy Awards. She won Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1997 for New Moon Daughter and Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2009 for Loverly.

Beyond her acclaimed solo career, Wilson played a prominent role in Wynton Marsalis’ 1997 oratorio Blood on the Fields, which made history as the first jazz work to receive a Pulitzer Prize.

Throughout her career, she collaborated with several prominent artists, including saxophonists Steve Coleman and Greg Osby, as well as hip-hop group The Roots.

Musician Jon Batiste paid an emotional tribute to Wilson, recalling the profound influence she had on his own artistic journey.

“I learned so much from her, and I am so sad she has passed away,” Batiste wrote.

“She had an unmistakable vocal tone, phrasing, and her approach of weaving folkloric, R&B, and diasporic music together with experimental and popular genres had a major impact on me. She sounded like the South.”

Wilson leaves behind a remarkable musical legacy defined by innovation, artistic courage and a voice that helped reshape the sound and possibilities of modern jazz.
