Former SSS Director-General Dies – TimesNG.com.ng

The former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) and pioneer Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Chief Albert Korubo Horsfall, has died.

Horsfall, a public servant and elder statesman from Rivers State, passed away peacefully, according to a statement issued by his son, Donald Horsfall, on Friday.

The family described his death as the loss of a “beloved patriarch,” while highlighting his decades of service to Nigeria, Rivers State and the Niger Delta.

The statement said the family was announcing his death “with profound gratitude to the Almighty God for a life of remarkable service and accomplishments,” adding that he lived a fulfilled and impactful life dedicated to God, his family, community, Rivers State and Nigeria.

The family said, “Chief A.K. Horsfall was an illustrious son of the Niger Delta, a distinguished public servant, statesman, administrator, and one of the most respected figures in the history of Rivers State and Nigeria at Large.”

Horsfall was described as one of the founding fathers of Rivers State who made significant contributions to the development of the state and the country during his public service career.

According to his family, his years in public service were marked by dedication, integrity and patriotism, with his leadership and experience earning him respect among successive generations of leaders and citizens.

The statement added, “Throughout his lifetime, he served the nation with uncommon dedication, integrity, and patriotism, leaving behind an enduring legacy of leadership, wisdom, and selfless service.”

The late elder statesman also played a prominent role in Nigeria’s intelligence and security architecture, having served as Director-General of the SSS and as the pioneer Director-General of the NIA.

He also chaired the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission, among other positions he held during his career.

His family recalled his commitment to justice, peace and good governance, saying his counsel and courage made him a respected figure in public life.

“His counsel, courage, and commitment to justice, peace, and good governance earned him the admiration of generations of leaders and citizens alike,” the statement said.

The family said that although his death had left an irreparable loss, his achievements and the impact he made during his lifetime would remain a source of comfort.

“While the family mourns this irreparable loss, we take comfort in the extraordinary life he lived and the indelible mark he left on the sands of time,” the statement added.

Donald said his father’s memory would continue to inspire people who had the opportunity to know him and benefit from his knowledge, experience and compassion.

The family has yet to announce details of the burial, saying arrangements for the funeral and other activities would be communicated later.

The statement added, “Details of funeral arrangements and other related activities will be communicated in due course.”
