The Controller, Federal Fire Service in the state, Eno Nwachukwu, disclosed this during the fire service sensitisation and enlightenment campaign for the Ember months, which took place on Friday in Lafia, the state capital.

Our correspondent reports that the Ember months fire safety campaign was themed, “Fire Safety, Emergency Evacuation And Practical First Aid Fire Fighting Drill.”

Nwachukwu explained that the command had recorded overwhelming success in responding to fire calls, saving several lives and salvaging property worth millions of naira.

The Controller and other personnel of the Federal Fire Service shortly after the event in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

“Since the beginning of this year, we have received more than 80 to 100 fire calls. I want to thank God that there was no fire call that we couldn’t tackle within the period under review.

“If you call us on time, just count it that it is done, no building was engulfed with fire. We were able to salvage all the situations”, she said.

Speaking on the significance of the sensitisation and awareness campaign for the Ember months, she said the service was being proactive by ensuring that members of the public were properly guided on how to prevent fire outbreaks and also how to handle fire incidents pending the arrival of firefighters.

Nwachukwu said, “It is in this Ember month that there are always incidents here and there, fire outbreaks in particular, may be you are leaving your house, you don’t turn off all electrical appliances, you overload your sockets. So we are trying to avoid all those kinds of issues during this season.”

Also speaking during the event, the Zonal Controller, Zone P, comprising Nasarawa and Plateau states, Controller Hadiza Saliu, said there were currently inter-agency collaborations between the Federal Fire Service and other security agencies in responding to emergencies.

“We collaborate with our sister agencies a lot on sensitising the public, and even trying to enforce where there are breach or non-compliance to fire standards. As well as when it comes to response to incidences, we have joint collaborative effort in attending to incidences”

“We have a lot of collaboration, even in terms of before emergency occurs, and also on prevention, because our emphasis now is more on prevention. We do not want emergencies to occur, not to talk of attending to incidences” she explained.

Our correspondent further reports that participants at the sensitisation and enlightenment campaign for the Ember months were drawn from other security agencies, civil servants, traditional rulers and the general public.

The high point of the event was the demonstration of fire drills on how to combat different types of fires using fire extinguishers, fire blankets, among others.
