Falconets Face Must-Win New Caledonia Clash With Round of 16 Qualification in Sight

Nigeria’s Falconets will be looking to secure their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup when they face New Caledonia in their final Group F match in Łódź on Sunday.

The game is scheduled for 2pm WAT, with Nigeria going into the encounter on one point from two matches after losing 2-0 to Spain before playing out a goalless draw with China.

The result against China kept Nigeria’s knockout-stage hopes alive, but the Falconets now need a victory against New Caledonia to strengthen their chances of progressing from the group.

Nigeria have two possible routes into the last 16.

The first is to finish second in Group F.

For that to happen, the Falconets must defeat New Caledonia, while Spain need to beat China in the other group fixture. Nigeria and China would then both finish on four points, meaning goal difference would determine which side occupies second place.

Spain have already qualified for the knockout stage after beating Nigeria and New Caledonia in their opening two matches. They followed their 2-0 victory over Nigeria with an emphatic 11-0 win over New Caledonia.

China, meanwhile, moved onto four points after their goalless draw with Nigeria and would qualify with a draw against Spain.

If Nigeria finish second in Group F, they will face the runners-up from Group B in the Round of 16.

The second route for Nigeria is qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.

The expanded 24-team tournament sends the top two teams from each group, plus the four best third-placed sides, into the Round of 16.

A victory over New Caledonia would take Nigeria to four points and put the Falconets in a strong position in the best-third-place standings. Ecuador, who have finished their campaign on three points, would already be behind Nigeria on points if the Falconets win.

Under that route, Nigeria’s eventual opponent would depend on the final third-place standings and the tournament bracket.

New Caledonia face a difficult task of their own. The tournament debutants have lost both of their matches, going down 5-0 to China before suffering an 11-0 defeat to Spain.

The Falconets, therefore, know what is required in Łódź: a win.

Victory would take Nigeria to four points and keep their record of reaching the knockout stage in every edition of the U-20 Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 2002 alive.

The other Group F fixture between China and already-qualified Spain will also be crucial to Nigeria’s final position. Both matches will kick off simultaneously at 2pm WAT, meaning the Falconets’ final position in the group will only become clear after the two matches are completed.
