Everton secured their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

David Moyes’ side needed a late goal to settle a tightly contested encounter, with substitute Charly Alcaraz finding the breakthrough in the 80th minute.

Alcaraz produced a fine individual effort, cutting inside the penalty area before calmly finishing to score his first goal for Everton in 13 months.

His previous goal for the club also came in the Carabao Cup, against Mansfield last year.

Everton were largely frustrated throughout the game by former goalkeeper Joao Virginia, who started for Wolves against the club where he spent seven years before leaving for Sporting in 2025.

Virginia made his biggest contribution before half-time when he denied Thierno Barry from close range with an important save.

However, he was unable to prevent Alcaraz from breaking the deadlock as Everton held on to maintain their unbeaten start to the season after six matches.

The match was watched by Everton supporters, Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Everton will host Newcastle United in the fourth round, with the tie scheduled to be played during the week commencing October 26.
