Arsenal maintained their perfect start to the season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday,

The Gunners were made to work for the three points, with Sunderland frustrating Mikel Arteta’s side for long periods despite Arsenal dominating possession.

David Raya proved crucial in the 55th minute when he saved Enzo Le Fée’s penalty after Ezri Konsa was penalised for pulling down Dan Ballard inside the box.

The Arsenal goalkeeper dived low to his left to keep the game level.

Arsenal took advantage just 121 seconds later. Half-time substitute Bruno Guimarães produced a moment of brilliance, curling a stunning 20-yard effort off the bar and into the net to give the visitors the lead.

It was Guimarães’ first goal for Arsenal and a particularly significant one given his previous ties to Newcastle United, Sunderland’s fierce local rivals.

Sunderland continued to push for an equaliser, but Raya remained composed in goal and produced another important save late on as the hosts searched for a way back into the game.

Arsenal finally sealed victory in the closing seconds when Bukayo Saka converted from the penalty spot after being fouled by Reinildo Mandava. The Sunderland defender was shown a second yellow card and sent off.

The result means Arsenal have now won all six of their matches in all competitions this season, including their opening four Premier League games.
