Eguavoen Appointed Interim Super Falcons Coach Ahead of Comoros Olympic Qualifier

Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim coach of the Super Falcons as Nigeria begins its campaign to qualify for the football event of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Eguavoen will lead the Super Falcons in their October Olympic qualifying ties against Comoros while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues its search for a permanent head coach.

Eguavoen Brings National Team Experience

Eguavoen brings extensive coaching experience to the assignment. He previously guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The former Nigeria international will work alongside Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nigeria Women’s Football League side Nasarawa Amazons.

Danjuma has considerable experience with Nigeria’s women’s national teams. He previously coached the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper coach Olatunji Baruwa has also been appointed to the interim technical team as goalkeeper trainer.

Baruwa has previously worked with several of Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles, CHAN Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets.

Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf completes the technical team as an assistant coach.

Yusuf earned 68 international caps for Nigeria and represented the Super Falcons at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Super Falcons Begin Olympic Qualifying Against Comoros

The 10-time African champions will enter the Olympic qualifying competition in the second round against Comoros.

Both legs are scheduled to be played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and October 13, 2026.

Nigeria received a bye into the second round after being ranked among the three highest-ranked teams in the competition.

Comoros secured its place in the second round after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

The Super Falcons must negotiate four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to secure one of Africa’s two tickets to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

If Nigeria eliminates Comoros, the team will advance to the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027.

Nigeria could face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco in that round.

A place in the fourth round would see Nigeria face one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali. Those fixtures are scheduled for October 4 to 12, 2027.

The final stage of the qualification race is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027.

At that stage, Nigeria could face one of Guinea, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Central African Republic, Algeria or Burkina Faso.

With the Olympic qualification campaign now underway, Eguavoen and his interim coaching team will be expected to guide the Super Falcons past Comoros and maintain Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the Olympic football tournament.
