The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a Maiduguri-based businessman, Bilal Muhammad, before the Borno State High Court over alleged N600,000 fraud.

The EFCC, in a statement via its X handle on Monday, September 7, 2026, said Muhammad was arraigned before Justice B.T. Zanna on a two-count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation and obtaining money by false pretence.

The anti-graft agency alleged that the defendant collected the money from a petitioner under the guise of selling a tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep, but failed to deliver the vehicle or refund the money.

One of the counts alleged that Muhammad, described as the Chief Executive Officer of GDF Homes Sale Enterprises Limited, obtained N600,000 from the petitioner for the purchase of a tricycle.

The charge stated: “That you, Bilal Muhammad CEO of GDF Homes Sale Enterprises Limited, sometimes in 2025 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did obtain the sum of N600,000.00 (Six Hundred Thousand Naira) under the guise of selling Keke Napep.”

The EFCC said the alleged offence contravened Section 1(1)(a) and (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and was punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

Muhammad pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.

Following his plea, prosecution counsel, A.D. Abdulmalik, asked the court to fix a date for trial and remand the defendant in the custody of the EFCC.

Justice Zanna adjourned the case until September 22, 2026, for commencement of hearing and ordered that Muhammad be remanded at the EFCC facility.

The EFCC said its investigation followed a petition alleging that Muhammad collected an aggregate sum of N600,000 from the petitioner, purportedly for the purchase of a tricycle, but allegedly failed to provide the vehicle or return the money.

The commission said Muhammad was arrested in connection with the allegation and subsequently charged to court.
