ECOWAS President Diop Meets Qatar, Sudan Ambassadors In Abuja

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, has met with the ambassadors of Qatar and Sudan to discuss ways of strengthening relations and cooperation with the regional bloc.

Diop received the Ambassador of Qatar to Nigeria, Yousef Mohammed Ahmed Al-Hailand, and the Ambassador of Sudan to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mohammed Abdelaai, in separate meetings at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

According to a post by ECOWAS via social media on Saturday, September 19, the meetings focused on areas of mutual interest between the regional bloc and the two countries.

The Commission said the discussions with the Qatari ambassador provided an opportunity to explore ways of enhancing cooperation in areas including regional integration, peace and security, and development.

It added that the engagements with the two ambassadors were aimed at strengthening relations and expanding cooperation with ECOWAS partners.

“The meetings provided an opportunity to discuss ways of strengthening relations and enhancing cooperation between ECOWAS and the state of Qatar on matters of mutual interest, including regional integration, peace and security and development,” the statement said.

The Commission said the engagements “underscore ECOWAS’ commitment to deepening partnerships with countries beyond West Africa in support of regional stability and sustainable development.”
