The Delta State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles without valid documents and those with improperly displayed number plates.

The operation, code-named Operation VELVET, began on Tuesday following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

The exercise is aimed at enforcing vehicle and traffic regulations, improving road safety and strengthening security across the state.

The police said the operation targets unregistered vehicles, vehicles without number plates and those with defaced, obscured, altered or deliberately covered number plates.

In Asaba, 10 vehicles were reportedly sanctioned for traffic violations and taken before the mobile court, where they are undergoing judicial proceedings.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Samuel Etaifo Erale, led the flag-off of the operation in Asaba, which simultaneously commenced across the command’s nine area commands and police divisions.

Erale urged motorists and vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles were properly documented and that approved number plates were clearly displayed.

He also directed officers deployed for the exercise to remain firm, civil and professional, warning that extortion, harassment and other forms of misconduct would not be tolerated.

The Commissioner appealed for motorists’ cooperation, assuring residents that enforcement would be carried out lawfully and with respect for the rights and dignity of citizens.

He said the operation would help improve vehicle identification, prevent criminal elements from using improperly identified vehicles and enhance safety and security on roads across Delta State.
