Customs Intercepts Pistol, Explosives, Police Uniforms In Oyo

The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, has intercepted a pistol, magazines, detonating cords and police camouflage materials in Oyo State, alongside cannabis valued at more than ₦900 million.

The seizures were recorded during the Command’s anti-smuggling operations in August.

Acting Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Wale Adewole, disclosed this in Ibadan while briefing journalists on the Command’s operations.

Among the items recovered were one pistol, six pistol magazines, one pump-action magazine and 60 detonating cords.

Customs officers also intercepted 573 Nigeria Police Force crests and 92 yards of Nigeria Police Force camouflage uniform fabric.

Adewole warned that the police materials could be exploited for impersonation, unauthorised access and other criminal activities.

The Command also seized 2,440 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, valued at more than ₦900 million.

Other seizures included 2,012 bags of foreign parboiled rice weighing 50 kilogrammes each, 550 bags of 25-kilogramme foreign rice, 1,150 used tyres and 101 used compressors.

Also intercepted were 48 packs of Tramadol, used clothing and shoes, 450 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit, foreign vegetable oil, foreign sugar, used vehicles and other prohibited items.

The Command further seized 10 containers of a substance identified as “Corrosive 8 Mercury”, which it said could pose serious risks to lives and property if improperly handled, stored or transported.

The total duty-paid value of the seized items was put at ₦4.1 billion.

Meanwhile, the Command said it generated ₦65.66 billion between January and August 2026, representing a 13.88 per cent increase from the ₦57.66 billion recorded during the same period in 2025.

Adewole said the Command would sustain intelligence-driven operations and collaboration with other security agencies to combat smuggling while facilitating legitimate trade.
