Former Barcelona winger Cristian Tello has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a career that spanned 512 appearances across six countries.

The La Masia graduate confirmed his decision on September 6 after most recently playing for UAE third-tier club Palm City FC, where he had featured since October 2025.

Tello rose to prominence at Barcelona before going on to represent several clubs during his career, including Porto, Fiorentina and Real Betis. He also played in the United States and Saudi Arabia during a career that took him across Europe, North America and the Middle East.

The Spanish winger shared an emotional farewell message reflecting on his journey, while thanking his family, teammates, coaches, club staff and supporters.

Writing on his official Instagram account, Tello said: “Today it is time to say goodbye to a part of my life. After so many years, so many matches, so many dressing rooms, so much joy and also difficult moments, the time has come to bring an end to professional football.

“Football has given me everything. It has allowed me to fulfil dreams that once seemed impossible, meet people I will carry with me forever, and experience moments that will stay in my memory for a lifetime. I have been fortunate enough to wear shirts that mean the world to me and to share the journey with team-mates, coaches, club staff, friends, and above all, my family.”

During his career, Tello won several major honours, including the La Liga title with Barcelona, the Copa del Rey with Real Betis and the MLS Cup with Los Angeles FC.

Reflecting further on his career, the former Barcelona winger added: “To everyone who has ever cheered me on, supported me, criticised me, or simply been there: thank you. From the bottom of my heart. I leave with the peace of mind that I gave everything for this sport and with immense pride in the journey travelled.

“Today my time as a professional footballer comes to an end, but everything football has taught me stays with me forever. Thank you, football.”

Tello’s retirement brings the curtain down on a nomadic career that saw him play in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the United States, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Having spent more than a decade playing professional football, the 35-year-old could now consider opportunities away from the pitch, with his experience across several major leagues potentially opening doors in coaching, football administration or sporting management.
