[BREAKING NEWS]: FG Shuts Down First Niger Bridge, Gives Reasons

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for emergency rehabilitation and maintenance work.

The closure will begin on Monday, September 7, 2026, and last until Monday, September 21, 2026, according to the Federal Ministry of Works.

The bridge, which links Anambra and Delta states, will be completely closed to motorists during the two-week rehabilitation period.

The ministry said the decision was taken because of the deteriorating condition of the bridge, particularly the carriageway and some damaged components.

The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Timothy Emenike, said the emergency intervention followed concerns raised by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during his recent visit to the state.

According to Emenike, the contractor handling part of the Onitsha-Enugu Dual Carriageway, SKECC, has been directed to commence the repairs immediately.

The rehabilitation will involve the removal of damaged asphalt and the laying of a new 40-millimetre wearing course on the bridge.

The contractor will also carry out repairs on affected bridge components and other maintenance works aimed at improving the condition and safety of the facility.

As part of the intervention, the Federal Government also plans to install solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around the bridge.

Motorists and other road users who normally use the First Niger Bridge are expected to make alternative arrangements during the closure period.

The Federal Ministry of Works said the temporary closure is necessary to allow the emergency rehabilitation work to be carried out safely and efficiently.
