Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Betta Edu, has commended First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for launching the National Community Food Bank for the South-South region in Calabar, Cross River State.
Edu described the initiative as a major intervention for vulnerable Nigerians, particularly pregnant and breastfeeding women, malnourished children and families in need of food support.

Speaking shortly after the launch, she said the food bank would not only provide immediate nutritional assistance but also create a market for local farmers and producers, boosting economic activity across Cross River and the South-South region.
She also praised Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, for their mobilisation and hospitality during the First Lady’s visit.
Edu further commended the Federal Government, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the First Lady for commissioning an ICT centre at the University of Cross River State.
She said the facility would equip young Nigerians, particularly women and youths, with digital skills needed to compete in the global economy, especially in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence.
According to her, the combination of social interventions and investments in technology and human capital demonstrated the administration’s commitment to improving citizens’ welfare while preparing young people for future opportunities.
“I believe that these young people will receive 360-degree digital training that can open doors for them both nationally and internationally,” she said.
