Bassey among EPL best defenders – Arbeloa

Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa has praised Nigeria international Calvin Bassey for his impressive display in Sunday’s draw against Manchester United at Craven Cottage.

Bassey started the encounter and played the full 90 minutes as Fulham fought back to secure a point with a late equaliser. The defender was also involved in Fulham’s opening goal, winning back possession before driving forward and eventually turning the ball into his own net.

Despite having his initial shot saved before a resulting own goal by Lisandro Martinez, Arbeloa was impressed with Bassey’s overall contribution, particularly his defensive work and composure in possession, as the Nigerian played a key role in Fulham’s performance against United.

“Calvin is one of the best defenders in the Premier League; he plays at a high level with and without the ball. He is doing so well,” Arbeloa said after the game.

The performance came as Fulham continued their search for a first Premier League victory under Arbeloa this season.

Fulham took the lead in the second half, but Manchester United salvaged a point late on when Matheus Cunha’s effort took a deflection on its way into the net.

Although his side surrendered the advantage, Arbeloa was satisfied with the overall performance and singled out Bassey for praise following another assured display.

The Fulham boss also highlighted the balance of youth and experience within his squad, with Nigeria international Alex Iwobi featuring alongside Bassey.

Bassey’s performance offers the defender a timely boost with the international break approaching, while Arbeloa’s praise further underlines his growing importance to the Fulham side.
