Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abubakar Yari, has commenced nationwide consultations ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

In a post on X on Sunday, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said Yari had begun strategic consultations with traditional and religious leaders across the country.

Dare described the move as the first outing of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, saying the consultations were designed as a grassroots political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 election.

The first stop was the Sultanate, where Yari met the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar III, following a prayer session attended by more than 1,000 Islamic clerics in Yari’s home area the previous week.

“We believe in justice. President Tinubu has achieved a lot and we can demonstrate that. We have a lot to showcase,” Yari said.

The Sultan, in his remarks, urged politicians to pursue politics peacefully and avoid exploiting divisions.

“Politics is a game of numbers, not of death. In politics what you need is people…” he said.

He added: “We must not weaponize politics in a negative way. Insecurity is everybody’s problem. You can never eradicate poverty. You can reduce it. You can never eradicate insecurity. But you can reduce it.”

According to Dare, the consultation tour will cover all six geopolitical zones and involve both Christian and Muslim religious leaders.

He said the campaign team would include governors and former governors, including the governors of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, as well as former Katsina Governor Aminu Masari, former Sokoto Governor and Senator Aliyu Wammako, former Borno Governor Kashim Shettima, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, former Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, former Kebbi Governor and Senator Adamu Aliero, and Hon. James Faleke.

Dare said Yari, whom Tinubu appointed as Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, was expected to lead efforts to mobilise more than 20 million Nigerians in support of the President’s 2027 bid.

The next stop on the consultation tour is Lagos in the South-West, where the team is expected to visit the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu.
