9/11 Anniversary: 2,977 Lights Recreate Twin Towers Over New York Harbor

A drone light installation has recreated the Twin Towers over New York Harbor as part of activities commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The installation, titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,” featured 2,977 lights rising over the harbor and forming the Twin Towers at full architectural scale, with each light representing one of the lives lost in the September 11, 2001, attacks.
In a post shared by Addison Mehr (@sharmedlife) on Instagram, the lights assemble in the night sky to recreate the outline of the former World Trade Center towers.
The installation was unveiled on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as a public art project sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts. Creative Director Addison Mehr and Sky Elements produced it, with input from 9/11 families, survivors, and first responders.

The artwork was designed in dialogue with New York’s annual “Tribute in Light” memorial and was accompanied by recorded music, including works by Philip Glass and John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls, written for the victims of the attacks.
The display comes two days before the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which killed 2,977 people in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
