Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has confirmed that 37 persons died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Speaking to journalists, Governor Bago said an investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

He said preliminary reports suggested the victims may have died from suffocation or lead poisoning, but stressed that the investigation would establish the actual cause.

“An investigation is being launched into the cause of the deaths,” Bago said.

The governor said authorities would work to determine what led to the deaths and establish responsibility.
