2027 Elections: Police Unveils Six-Pillar Security Framework

President Bola Tinubu has opened the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO) in Owerri, Imo State, with Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu unveiling a six-pillar framework to guide security operations for the 2027 general elections.

The conference, held on Monday, September 21, is themed “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections.”

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, President Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force in ensuring peaceful and secure elections.

The President stressed the need for professionalism, impartiality, intelligence-led operations and effective coordination among security agencies.

He also assured the Police of continued government support in training, technology, operational logistics, welfare and institutional reforms.

Addressing senior police officers at the conference, IGP Disu outlined six priorities for the Force’s election-security roadmap.

They are strengthened intelligence and early-warning systems; intensive training and preparedness; joint command and inter-agency coordination; effective communication and deployment of technology; sustained community partnership; and absolute neutrality.

Disu said the Police must invest in measures capable of identifying and preventing violence before it occurs, rather than responding only after incidents have taken place.

He made the remarks as the world marked the International Day of Peace, observed in 2026 under the theme, “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”

The IGP said, for the Police, investing in peace requires professionalism, public trust and proactive security measures.

As part of the preparations for the 2027 elections, Commissioners of Police are expected to identify and map potential electoral flashpoints, criminal networks and other emerging threats within their respective commands.

They are also expected to strengthen early-warning mechanisms and community-based intelligence gathering ahead of the polls.

Disu announced that the Nigeria Police Force would launch an official public election complaints line on October 12, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The IGP also warned police personnel against taking sides in the political process.

He said officers found harassing voters, colluding with political actors, abusing police powers or otherwise compromising the neutrality of the Force would be held accountable.

Disu similarly warned against political violence, voter intimidation, vote-buying and other electoral offences, stressing the need for the Police to maintain public confidence throughout the electoral process.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who welcomed participants to the conference, expressed delight at hosting CARSPO for the fourth time and commended the Police for maintaining the platform for strategic discussions on contemporary security challenges.

The conference brought together senior police officers and other government and security stakeholders to deliberate on the security challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.
