Rodri Hernández has chosen Barcelona despite interest from Real Madrid, with his decision reportedly driven largely by his long-standing admiration for the Catalan club’s footballing philosophy.
In a report by Ballon d’Or, the Spanish midfielder’s preference for Barcelona is linked to his affinity with the club’s style of play, which he has admired since his formative years. The report highlighted Rodri’s own comments about Barcelona’s football and the influence of midfield legends Sergio Busquets and Xavi Hernández on his understanding of the game.
Rodri’s decision comes after he attracted interest from several major European clubs following an outstanding period at Manchester City and his success with Spain. He has now opted to return to La Liga with Barcelona, where he is expected to become a central figure in Hansi Flick’s midfield.
A major reason behind the decision is Rodri’s connection with Barcelona’s possession-based football. The midfielder has previously spoken about how watching the club’s teams helped shape his understanding of what a midfielder should be.
“I’d never seen football so beautiful, elegant and simple. I’d watch Barcelona, I’d look at Busquets, Xavi… and sometimes you reflect on it and say: that’s the sort of player I am,” Rodri said in an interview with ‘Universo Valdano’, according to Ballon d’Or.
That admiration for Busquets is particularly significant. Rodri has developed into one of football’s leading defensive midfielders, combining positional intelligence, composure under pressure and the ability to dictate the tempo of matches from deep.
Those characteristics have made comparisons with Busquets inevitable, with Rodri himself acknowledging the influence of the former Barcelona and Spain midfielder.
At Barcelona, Rodri is expected to occupy a role that closely resembles the one Busquets held during the club’s most successful era. Rather than simply shielding the defence, he would be responsible for controlling possession, dictating the rhythm of play and providing the platform from which Barcelona’s attacking players can operate.
The move also offers Rodri an opportunity to play alongside several players who share his understanding of Spanish football. Barcelona’s midfield already includes Pedri, while Dani Olmo and Gavi provide further technical quality and versatility.

The potential combination of Rodri, Pedri and Olmo could give Flick a midfield capable of controlling games through possession while also providing greater defensive security.
Rodri’s choice is also significant because Real Madrid emerged as another possible destination. However, by the time Madrid intensified their interest, Barcelona had already established a strong position with the midfielder.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Rodri had decided to join Barcelona around 10 days before the agreement between the two clubs was reached, with personal terms subsequently agreed.
For Rodri, the Barcelona move therefore represents more than simply a transfer to another European giant. It is a return to Spain and an opportunity to play for a club whose footballing principles have influenced his own development.
His arrival also comes at the peak of his individual career. Rodri is a Ballon d’Or winner, European champion and 2026 World Cup winner, while his Manchester City spell saw him establish himself as one of the world’s premier midfielders.
Barcelona, meanwhile, see the 30-year-old as a player capable of giving their midfield experience, authority and tactical balance.
Ultimately, Rodri’s decision appears to have been shaped by footballing identity as much as sporting ambition. Barcelona represents the style of football he grew up admiring, the midfield role in which he feels most comfortable and an opportunity to continue his career in Spain at one of the world’s biggest clubs.
