Voting was reportedly disrupted at the polling unit of former Osun State Governor and former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, during Saturday’s governorship election.
Suspected thugs according to a report by TheNation reportedly stormed the polling unit, chased away voters and disrupted the electoral process, causing tension in the area.
The incident forced some voters to leave the polling unit as the situation became unsettled, temporarily bringing voting activities to a halt.
The development has raised concerns over the conduct of the election at the affected polling unit, with details of the incident and the response of security agencies still awaited.
Some party agents alleged that the suspected thugs were members of the All Progressives Congress.
However, the APC party agent at the polling booth, Mrs Abogunloko Olufunke, denied the allegation.
“Those thugs are not our members. I don’t know them,” she said.
Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State and also national Secretary of the ADC has been associated at the forefront of the African Democratic Congress campaign in the election.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns across the state, with several areas identified as potential electoral hotspots ahead of the poll.
Further details, including whether voting has resumed at the affected polling unit and any action taken by security agencies, are being awaited.
