Arsenal and Manchester City will face off in the Community Shield on Sunday, with the Premier League champions taking on the holders of the FA Cup.
The Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, will host the traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season as last season’s Premier League rivals renew their battle. Arsenal claimed the league title for the first time in 22 years, while City still enjoyed domestic success by completing a double that included a Carabao Cup final victory over the Gunners.
The match will serve as the final pre-season outing for both teams before the new Premier League campaign gets underway. Beyond the chance to lift the first piece of silverware of the season, both sides will be looking to gain an early psychological advantage over a familiar rival.
Arsenal have endured an inconsistent pre-season, winning their opening two games before going three matches without victory. Mikel Arteta’s side lost to Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund before playing out a draw with Como, with their normally dependable defence showing signs of vulnerability.
City, meanwhile, have played only three pre-season matches under new manager Enzo Maresca. They drew with Inter Milan before recording 3-1 victories over the K-League All-Stars and Atletico Madrid. Their performance against Arsenal will offer an early indication of how they intend to approach the season under their new boss.

Arsenal Close in on Community Shield Record
With both teams still managing their squads following the disruption caused by the World Cup, neither side is expected to field a full-strength XI. The Community Shield should also provide an opportunity for new arrivals to make their mark, while Maresca is likely to use the game to introduce further tactical adjustments.
Those factors make the outcome difficult to predict, although Arsenal enter the contest as slight favourites.
The Gunners were arguably England’s strongest side last season and also came close to European glory. Despite an uneven pre-season, Arteta’s team should be expected to raise their performance level against a major rival.
Both teams could show signs of rustiness, but Arsenal’s continuity under Arteta and the momentum built from their title-winning campaign could give them the advantage in Cardiff.
Arsenal’s Community Shield Record: Only Manchester United, with 21 victories, have won the competition more times than Arsenal, who are chasing an 18th title. The Gunners have won 71% of their 24 appearances and have triumphed in each of their last five Community Shield outings, including a penalty shootout victory over City in 2023.
Arteta vs. Maresca: The two former Guardiola protégés have met three times previously, with Maresca yet to defeat Arteta. During his time at Chelsea, Maresca recorded two draws and one defeat against Arsenal.
Head-to-head record: City have won the last two meetings with Arsenal, but their recent record in the fixture is less convincing. Before their Carabao Cup triumph last season, City had gone six consecutive games without beating the London club.
Prediction: Arsenal 2–1 Man City
Arsenal Predicted Lineup vs. Man City
Arsenal’s main injury problems are concentrated in defence, which could explain some of the uncertainty displayed at the back during pre-season. William Saliba remains sidelined with a back injury, while Jurriën Timber is also expected to miss the beginning of the campaign after making only one appearance since mid-March.
Ben White is expected to start at right-back in Timber’s absence, while Cristhian Mosquera could partner Gabriel in central defence as Saliba’s replacement. Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapié are expected to compete for the left-back position.
Arsenal have now welcomed all of their players back to north London, including those who were given extended breaks following the World Cup. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Mikel Merino, David Raya and Martín Zubimendi are therefore available for selection.
Myles Lewis-Skelly could feature in midfield despite continued speculation over his future, while new signing Bruno Guimarães may be handed his first start. Christos Tzolis is also expected to get the nod on the left wing ahead of Gabriel Martinelli following an impressive pre-season.
Arsenal predicted lineup vs. Man City (4-3-3): Kepa; White, Mosquera, Gabriel, Calafiori; Ødegaard, Guimarães, Lewis-Skelly; Dowman, Gyökeres, Tzolis.
Man City Predicted Lineup vs. Arsenal
City are unlikely to start Erling Haaland, who has only recently returned to training. New signing Elliot Anderson, reportedly valued at $155 million, is also expected to begin on the bench rather than feature from the start.
Rodri will not be available to Maresca as he continues his recovery from back surgery sustained after Spain’s World Cup triumph.
Players who returned late following the World Cup are also likely to have limited involvement in the match.
Omar Marmoush could lead the attack in Haaland’s absence after scoring twice against Atletico Madrid. Antoine Semenyo, Phil Foden and Savinho are expected to provide support behind the Egyptian forward.
Tijjani Reijnders is also set to miss the match as he closes in on a reported $70 million transfer to Al Qadsiah.
Man City predicted lineup vs. Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol; González, Kovačić; Savinho, Foden, Semenyo; Marmoush.
