TCN Rejects AEDC Claim, Says Low Generation Caused Abuja Power Shortage

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has rejected a claim by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) that the reduction in its power allocation was caused by the tripping of 330kV transmission lines supplying Abuja from the Shiroro Transmission Substation.

AEDC had, in a statement dated August 26, 2026, informed customers of electricity supply constraints and attributed a drop in its allocation from about 641MW to 314MW to the alleged tripping of transmission lines supplying the Federal Capital Territory.

However, TCN described the claim as “inaccurate and misleading”, saying the reduction in AEDC’s allocation was caused by low power generation on the national grid.

In a statement signed by its management, TCN said, “All 330kV transmission lines within Abuja Region are currently in circuit, and no such tripping of the 330kV transmission lines supplying Abuja axis, as alleged by AEDC, has occurred.”

The company said the reduction in AEDC’s allocation and the resulting load shedding across its feeders could therefore not be attributed to any tripping of TCN transmission lines in the Abuja region.

TCN stressed the importance of accurate and clear information dissemination, particularly when communicating electricity supply challenges to the public.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to efficiently transmit available bulk electricity across the country and maintain the stability, reliability and integrity of Nigeria’s transmission grid.
