Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first goal for Coventry City and provided an assist as they defeated League One side Plymouth Argyle 4-2 away in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
The forward made his second appearance for Coventry since joining from Nottingham Forest, having made his debut in last week’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Awoniyi needed just three minutes to open the scoring, finishing a pass from Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi before turning provider two minutes later to set up Jack Rudoni for Coventry’s second.
Plymouth fought back to level the contest through Oliver Irow and Xavier Amaechi, but Coventry regained the lead in the 67th minute when Ephron Mason-Clark found the net.

Peter Torp then sealed the victory from the penalty spot with 12 minutes remaining, sending Coventry into the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Awoniyi’s Nigeria teammate, Frank Onyeka, was not included in Coventry’s matchday squad for the encounter.
The 28-year-old joined Coventry this summer after four seasons at Nottingham Forest in a reported £9 million deal.
His goal and assist against Plymouth marked an encouraging start to his Coventry career as Frank Lampard’s side prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years.
