Super Falcons Target Quarter-Final Spot Against Egypt

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, will be aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) when they take on Egypt in their final Group C fixture on Wednesday.

The defending champions bounced back from a surprise opening defeat to Malawi with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia, courtesy of an Asisat Oshoala strike, reviving their hopes of retaining the continental title and qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Despite Egypt’s difficult campaign, which has seen them suffer a 6-0 defeat to Zambia before losing 3-1 to Malawi, Head Coach Justin Madugu has warned against complacency, insisting the North Africans remain a dangerous side.

Nigeria will, however, be without defender Tosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini, both suspended after disciplinary issues.

Demehin was sent off during the win over Zambia, while Echegini accumulated two yellow cards in the opening two matches.

Madugu is expected to reshuffle his squad, with Christy Ucheibe likely to partner veteran defender Osinachi Ohale at the heart of the defence, while Toni Payne could feature alongside captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimatu Ayinde in midfield.

Up front, Oshoala is tipped to continue leading the attack, with Uchenna Kanu also in contention after her lively performance against Malawi.

A victory over Egypt would guarantee Nigeria a place in the knockout stage as they continue their quest for a record-extending continental crown.
