Police Launch Investigation Into Military Shooting of Adamawa Businessman

The Adamawa State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the alleged shooting of a businessman by military personnel in Mubi North Local Government Area of the state following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s family.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on the night of August 2, 2026, has heightened concerns over the conduct of security personnel during operations involving civilians.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, the matter was reported to the police on August 3 by Mr Muslim Abubakar, a resident of Yelwa Ward in Mubi North.
Nguroje said Abubakar alleged that his younger brother, Suleiman Abubakar, sustained a gunshot injury during an encounter with military personnel.
“He alleged that his younger brother, Suleiman Abubakar, sustained a gunshot injury during an encounter with some military personnel on the night of August 2, 2026,” the statement read.
The police said that upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Mubi North Division swung into action, leading a team of operatives to the scene and ensured that the victim received prompt medical attention.
According to the command, Suleiman Abubakar was initially taken to a medical facility in Mubi before he was referred to a higher medical facility in Yola for further treatment. The police, however, did not disclose his current condition.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, CP Kabiru Hassan, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The command also disclosed that it had established contact with the relevant military authorities to facilitate cooperation and ensure a transparent investigation.
Appealing for calm, Nguroje assured residents that the command remained committed to uncovering the facts surrounding the incident.
“The Adamawa State Police Command, while appealing for calm, assures members of the public that the investigation will be conducted professionally and transparently,” he affirmed.
He further appealed to members of the public to assist investigators with credible information that could aid the inquiry.
“Anyone with useful information that may assist the investigation is encouraged to come forward to the nearest police station or contact the Police Public Relations Office,” the statement added.
The command also assured residents that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
The latest incident comes amid growing concerns over allegations of excessive use of force by security personnel in parts of the country.
In 2024, an Army personnel allegedly shot and killed a young man in Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State following an argument reportedly involving the soldier’s girlfriend. The incident drew public outrage and renewed calls for greater accountability among security agencies.
