PHOTOS: Peter Obi Urges FG to Tackle Insecurity During Benue Visit

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to protect lives and property following recent attacks on communities in Benue State.

Obi made the call in a post on X after visiting Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju, communities recently affected by attacks allegedly carried out by non-state actors.

He said more than 10 people were killed or declared missing in Otukpo-Nobi, while several others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment in hospitals.

Obi also visited Efeyi-Ugboju, where he said more than 13 people were reportedly killed and several others injured.

According to him, he was informed during the visit that 14 people had also been abducted along Ankpechi Road earlier in the day.

The former governor said he joined residents at the mass burial site of the victims in praying for the repose of those who lost their lives before visiting the hospital to sympathise with the injured and pray for their recovery.

“Having visited, seen, and spoken with those affected, I urge the Federal Government to demonstrate a greater commitment to securing the lives and property of citizens and to closing the ungoverned spaces that have become breeding grounds for insecurity,” Obi said.

He stressed that protecting citizens remains a fundamental responsibility of government, particularly in communities facing persistent attacks.

“The primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” he said.

Obi said the government must be reminded of this responsibility when it fails to adequately protect communities such as Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju from attacks.

“When government fails in this responsibility, as it has with the people of Otukpo-Nobi, Efeyi-Ugboju, and other troubled communities, it must be reminded of that sacred obligation,” he added.
