Stakeholders at the First South-East Regional Security Summit 2026 have emphasised the need for greater collaboration, intelligence sharing and a unified approach to tackling insecurity across the region.

 

The summit, themed “Collaborative Approaches to Strengthening Security and Regional Stability,” was held on Thursday at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State.

 

Among those in attendance were the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.); Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu; Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris; representatives of the governors of Enugu, Imo, Anambra and Ebonyi states; the representative of the Senate President, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua; Chairman of the Abia State Security Advisory Council, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd.); Maj.-Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (Rtd.); Justice Mary Odili (Rtd.); the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; members of the Armed Forces and other security stakeholders.

 

President Bola Tinubu also sent a goodwill message to the summit.

According to a post by Abia State Governor Alex Otti on his X handle on Friday, participants stressed that lasting peace and security in the South-East would depend on sustained cooperation among governments, security agencies and other stakeholders.

 

He said, “Their collective voices underscored the importance of unity in tackling our shared challenges. Special recognition goes to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, whose leadership and dedication to safeguarding our skies remain invaluable to national security.

 

“The message is clear: lasting peace and security in the South East demand collaboration, intelligence sharing, and a common resolve. Together, we will continue to make crime unprofitable, strengthen our institutions, and build a safer, more prosperous region for all.”

 

The summit also highlighted the importance of making crime unprofitable, strengthening institutions and promoting regional stability to create a safer and more prosperous South-East.
