NYSC DG Commends Abia Government For Support, Seeks Allowance Review Implementation

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Abia State Government for its support for the Scheme, particularly in renovating the NYSC Orientation Camp and improving the welfare of Corps Members.

Nafiu made the commendation when he paid a courtesy visit to the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, at Umunu, Umuehim, in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.

The NYSC DG expressed appreciation for the renovation of the Orientation Camp, the provision of a new Secretariat complex to enhance the operations of the Scheme and the upward review of Corps Members’ allowance by the state government.

Nafiu described Abia as a “peaceful and friendly State”, noting that the state had more female Corps Members than males and was among the few states where Corps Members were serving in every local government area.

He, however, appealed to the state government to implement the recently reviewed allowance for Corps Members and commence the second phase of the renovation of the Orientation Camp.

Responding, Otti congratulated Nafiu on his appointment as NYSC Director-General and recalled that his dissatisfaction with the deplorable condition of facilities at the Orientation Camp during his visit in 2023 informed his decision to approve the overhaul of the facilities.

The governor said, “Phase one of the renovation work had been completed, and I have directed that phase two of the renovation should commence.”

Otti said the state was pleased with the 8,890 Corps Members currently serving in Abia and requested the deployment of more Corps Members to the state.

He stressed that Abia was “not just home to Corps Members but also for everyone else who came to the State,” citing the example of the state’s Head of Service, Mr Benson Ojeikere, who was deployed to Abia as a Corps Member and later employed into the state civil service after distinguishing himself during his service year.

The governor said the state remained committed to creating a conducive environment for Corps Members and other Nigerians serving and working in Abia.
