Nigeria Unveils National Sovereign Cloud Framework To Strengthen Data Security

Nigeria has taken a major step towards strengthening its digital infrastructure with the signing of the National Sovereign Cloud Regulatory Instrument, a framework designed to improve cloud governance, data security and digital resilience.

The signing ceremony, held at the headquarters of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in Abuja, brought together key stakeholders in the country’s digital ecosystem, including the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Engr. Nadungu Gagare, the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone Limited, Ibrahim Adeyanju.

According to Galaxy Backbone, the regulatory instrument establishes Nigeria’s national guidelines and governance framework for cloud adoption, cloud services and supporting digital infrastructure.

The framework also sets out requirements for data classification, data sovereignty, cloud security, risk management and investment promotion, providing a unified approach to cloud governance across the country.

Galaxy Backbone said the initiative would help strengthen digital trust, safeguard national data assets and support the Federal Government’s drive towards a secure and resilient digital economy.

“As the Federal Government’s trusted digital infrastructure and shared services provider, Galaxy Backbone remains committed to supporting the implementation of policies and technologies that strengthen digital trust, protect national data assets, and accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda,” the company said.

The National Sovereign Cloud Regulatory Instrument is expected to guide the adoption of cloud technologies by public and private sector organisations while enhancing the security, resilience and governance of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
