Nigeria joined the Government and people of the Republic of Benin on Saturday to commemorate the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the longstanding bonds of friendship, regional cooperation and shared commitment to peace and security between both neighbouring nations.
In a statement signed by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 9 Brigade, Major Akinola Ajibola, the Nigerian Army said the colourful ceremony, held at the iconic Amazone in Cotonou, featured an impressive display of military professionalism and cultural pride, with the Nigerian contingent delivering one of the standout performances of the event.
The statement said the Nigerian contingent, led by the Commander, 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, “thrilled dignitaries and spectators with a flawless march past executed in both slow and quick time.”
It added that the contingent displayed “exceptional discipline, impeccable coordination, and military precision,” earning loud applause from the President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, and other guests at the event.

According to the Army, “the highlight of Nigeria’s participation was the breathtaking silent drill display by the Nigerian Army,” describing the performance as a showcase of “extraordinary dexterity, synchronization and mastery of arms handling,” which left the audience visibly mesmerised and drew sustained ovation from distinguished guests and thousands of spectators.
The event was attended by Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, the Nigerian Defence Attaché to the Republic of Benin, Colonel S.A. Yahaya, senior military officers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of friendly nations.
The Army noted that Nigeria’s participation “underscored the enduring cordial relationship between both countries and reflected the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to fostering military diplomacy, strengthening regional partnerships and promoting peace, stability and cooperation across West Africa.”
It added that the contingent’s performance “not only projected the professionalism and operational excellence of the Nigerian Army but also reinforced the deep historical and cultural ties that continue to unite Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.”
According to the statement, Nigeria’s participation in the celebrations “aptly reflected this enduring spirit of friendship, mutual respect and regional solidarity.”
