NiDCOM Celebrates First Black Woman to Earn Doctorate in Robotics from Michigan Varsity

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated Nigerian-born engineer, Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, on her historic achievement as the first Black woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Robotics from the University of Michigan, United States.

NiDCOM, in a statement by its Director, Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Monday, August 3, described Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s accomplishment as a testament to the excellence and global contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora.

The Chairman/CEO of the commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the engineer for her outstanding achievement, describing it as a reflection of brilliance, dedication and commitment to excellence.

Dabiri-Erewa said the milestone further demonstrates the impact Nigerians continue to make across various fields globally.

According to her, “Oluwami’s historic accomplishment reinforces the Commission’s belief that Nigerians, wherever they reside, continue to distinguish themselves through innovation, hard work and academic excellence, while serving as worthy ambassadors of the country.”

She noted that earning the highest academic qualification in the specialised field of robotics was not only a personal achievement for Dosunmu-Ogunbi but also a source of inspiration for young Nigerians, especially girls and women interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The NiDCOM boss stated that the achievement would encourage more young Nigerians to pursue careers in innovation, research and technology.

She said the commission remains committed to identifying and celebrating Nigerians in the diaspora whose accomplishments continue to promote the country’s image internationally.

NiDCOM also urged young Nigerians to draw inspiration from Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s journey by embracing education, innovation and determination as pathways to achieving their goals.

The commission added that it would continue to support greater diaspora engagement in national development through the recognition of Nigerians making significant contributions around the world.
