The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), with support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CDC Foundation, Gates Foundation and other partners, has strengthened Nigeria’s capacity for laboratory-based integrated disease surveillance.

The initiative includes the establishment of a Multiplex Bead Assay (MBA) Laboratory at the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja, aimed at enhancing the country’s ability to detect and monitor infectious diseases.

To further strengthen the surveillance system, a team of U.S. CDC experts spent two weeks at the MBA Laboratory at the Central Public Health Laboratory in Lagos, where they conducted capacity-building activities focused on MBA techniques and the transfer of skills in bead coupling technology.

The collaboration is expected to position Nigeria as a leading MBA laboratory hub in West Africa and improve the country’s capacity to identify and respond to infectious disease threats.

The initiative underscores ongoing health security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, with both countries working with partners to strengthen regional disease surveillance and make West Africa safer.
