Navy intercepts 500 litres suspected illegal AGO, cannabis in Lagos

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 500 litres of products suspected to be illegally sourced Automotive Gas Oil, AGO, alongside substances believed to be cannabis, during an operation in Folu community, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
It was gathered that the operation was carried out on Monday, August 24, 2026, by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Lekki, as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the illegal storage and movement of petroleum products and combat the spread of illicit drugs within the base’s area of responsibility.
The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho said the operation followed intelligence-led efforts to tackle activities considered harmful to national economic interests and public safety.
According to him, the individuals connected to the suspected illicit activities fled the location before naval personnel could apprehend them.
Folorunsho said the recovered products and suspected cannabis were subsequently secured and taken to the base for further investigation and necessary action in accordance with established procedures.
He said the interception demonstrated the Navy’s continued resolve to prevent criminal activities within its operational jurisdiction, particularly those involving the illegal trade in petroleum products and other prohibited substances.
“The Nigerian Navy remains committed to disrupting activities that threaten national economic interests, public safety and security within its area of operations,” Folorunsho said.
He added that the operation was part of broader measures by the Nigerian Navy to curb the unlawful movement and storage of petroleum products, as well as other criminal activities along Nigeria’s waterways and coastal communities.
The Navy said it would continue to sustain operations aimed at protecting the nation’s economic assets and maintaining security across its areas of responsibility.
