The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urged Nigerians to make it a habit of reading food labels before purchasing packaged food products, saying the practice is essential for making informed and healthier food choices.

The advice was contained in the maiden edition of the agency’s #NAFDACExplains series shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, where it educated consumers on the importance of understanding information provided on food packaging.

Speaking in the video, a food safety expert in NAFDAC’s Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate, Abubakar Umar, said many consumers focus only on a product’s appearance, brand or price while ignoring critical details that could affect their health.

“When you buy a packaged food, what usually catches your attention first? Is it the brand? The picture on the packaging? Or perhaps the price? For many of us, that’s where we stop. But there’s something even more important, and that is the food label,” he said.

Umar explained that food labels contain valuable information that helps consumers make better decisions for themselves and their families.

He advised Nigerians to first confirm that products are still within their shelf life by checking the date marking.

“So, the next time you pick up a packaged food, take a few seconds to read the label. Start by checking the date marking to ensure that the product is within its shelf life,” he said.

He also encouraged consumers to carefully review the list of ingredients, particularly those with allergies or special dietary needs, to avoid substances that may be harmful to them.

In addition, Umar urged buyers to examine the nutrition information panel to understand the levels of nutrients such as sugar, salt, fats and protein contained in the product.

“Take a moment to read the nutrition information or nutrition facts panel, which tells you about nutrients such as sugar, salt, fats, and protein, helping you make choices that support a healthier diet,” he said.

The food safety expert further advised consumers to verify that every packaged food carries a valid NAFDAC registration number before purchase.

“In addition, you should always look for the NAFDAC registration number, which indicates that these products have gone through NAFDAC’s registration process before being placed on the market shelves,” Umar added.

In a statement accompanying the video, the agency highlighted four essential checks consumers should make before buying packaged foods: the date marking, ingredient list, nutrition information panel and NAFDAC registration number.

NAFDAC said spending just a few moments reading product labels could help Nigerians make safer choices.

“A few seconds spent reading the label can help you make informed decisions for yourself and your family,” the agency stated.

Umar concluded by encouraging consumers to pay closer attention to food labels before making purchases.

“So, before you buy it, read it. And before you eat it, understand it. Until next time, stay informed; stay safe,” he said.
