LAWMA Secures Rotaract, Leo Clubs’ Support For Sustainable Waste Management

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the support of the Rotaract Club of Ikoyi and Achiever Leo Club for its efforts to promote sustainable waste management, environmental consciousness and a circular economy across Lagos State.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by representatives of the clubs to the LAWMA headquarters in Ijora-Olopa on Friday.

Speaking during the visit, LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the Authority was strengthening waste collection, resource recovery and recycling while exploring innovative ways to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills.

“We are strengthening waste collection, resource recovery and recycling, while advancing innovative approaches to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills and unlock the economic value of discarded materials,” Gbadegesin said.

He said the proposed development of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in strategic locations, including Badagry and Agbowa, would strengthen waste sorting, recycling and resource recovery.

According to him, the facilities would also create opportunities for sustainable economic activities within the waste management value chain.

Gbadegesin also highlighted the LAWMA Academy as a platform for building environmental consciousness among children and youths.

He said the Academy equips young people with practical knowledge and skills in waste management, recycling and sustainable living, while encouraging them to see waste as a resource.

“Waste should not merely be seen as refuse, but as a valuable resource that can be creatively transformed into useful products and wealth-generating opportunities,” he said.

The LAWMA boss showcased innovative products made by LAWMA Academy interns from recyclable materials, noting that their creativity demonstrated the potential of recycling to promote environmental consciousness and entrepreneurial skills.

He welcomed the clubs’ interest in supporting LAWMA’s environmental agenda, stressing that sustainable waste management required collective action.

“Achieving sustainable waste management requires the collective efforts of government, private organisations, civil society groups, youth organisations and residents,” Gbadegesin said.

The representatives of the clubs, led by Achiever Leo Club President, Agboola Yussuf, and Rotaract Club of Ikoyi Vice President, Olayori Fawaz, commended LAWMA’s efforts and pledged to collaborate with the Authority on initiatives promoting environmental awareness and a cleaner Lagos.
