LAWMA Seals Shops Along Tejuosho-Ojuelegba Corridor Over Illegal Waste Dumping

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed several shops along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridor for violating the state’s environmental sanitation laws by indiscriminately dumping refuse on road medians.

The enforcement exercise, conducted on Sunday, was led by LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), OP MESA personnel and officers of the Nigeria Police.

The operation focused on business premises accused of repeatedly disposing of waste improperly despite continuous public sensitisation campaigns and multiple warnings from the Lagos State Government.

The state government has intensified efforts to enforce environmental sanitation regulations in recent months as part of measures to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, reduce flooding caused by blocked drainage systems and improve public health.

Businesses and residents have consistently been advised to use their designated Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operators and comply with waste disposal regulations or face sanctions, including the sealing of their premises.

Announcing the exercise in a post on his official X account, LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operation targeted persistent violators of environmental laws.

“Today, our @Lawma_gov Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, working alongside @LAGESCOfficial (KAI) officials, OP MESA military personnel and the Nigeria Police, is carrying out another round of enforcement operations along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridor, with shops being sealed over the indiscriminate disposal of waste on the road median.”

Gbadegesin said the enforcement covered Modele Street, Fagbile Street and Maja Street, where authorities have continued to record repeated sanitation violations.

“The operation currently covers Modele Street, Fagbile Street and Maja Street, where persistent environmental sanitation violations continue despite sustained advocacy, repeated warnings and previous engagements. These enforcement actions are necessary to restore environmental order, protect public infrastructure and ensure compliance with Lagos State environmental laws.”

He added that the affected business premises would remain under seal until the owners complied fully with the state’s sanitation regulations.

“The affected shops will remain sealed until the required sanitation standards are met and full compliance with environmental regulations is achieved,” he said.

Gbadegesin stressed that the exercise was aimed at promoting compliance rather than punishing offenders.

“Our objective remains compliance, not punishment. We urge all businesses and residents to patronise their assigned PSP operators, keep their surroundings clean and dispose of waste responsibly. Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier and more liveable Lagos,” he concluded.
