Adebanjo Oluolamide, the best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2025/2026 academic session, has attributed his academic success to his faith in God, resilience and determination.

Oluolamide, who graduated with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97, disclosed this in an interview with LASU media, where he also spoke about his academic journey and plans for the future.

He explained that he chose LASU after discovering that the course he wanted to study was, at the time, only available at a private university.

“At the time I was applying for the course I wanted, there was no school offering it other than a private university, so I opted for LASU,” he said.

Despite his academic focus, Oluolamide said he remained actively involved in extracurricular activities, tutorials and religious activities throughout his time at the university.

“I am particularly proud that I did not just graduate with a CGPA of 4.97; I was also actively involved in communities, in tutorials, and in things of God,” he said.

He identified the Space Club LASU as one of his proudest extracurricular achievements, noting that he was among its founding members.

“One particular community that I am so proud of is the Space Club LASU because I was one of the founding members of that club. The club consists of a group of students that I inspire about the wonders of space,” he added.

Oluolamide said his academic achievement was made possible by his faith and persistence, stressing that he consistently reminded himself not to give up.

“So the secret behind this team, firstly is God, because without God I am nothing. And also resilience. I am always working with this mantra — never give up, never give up,” he said.

Reflecting on his university experience, he described the journey as one characterised by both challenges and achievements, with graduating as the best student standing out as his biggest accomplishment.

“Great one coupled with ups and downs. There have been some major wins. And the major win is graduating as best student,” he said.

Outside academics, Oluolamide said he enjoys football and other sports.

He also disclosed that he plans to pursue what he described as “DART” after his first degree, an acronym covering Data Science, Aerospace Engineering, Research and Teaching.

Meanwhile, Ayilara Olaleye, the best graduating student for the 2024/2025 academic session, said his father influenced his decision to study at LASU.

Olaleye, a graduate of the Department of Management Technology, described his experience at the university as an opportunity to interact with people from different parts of Nigeria.

“LASU has been a great institution. It has been a very interesting experience. I have met different types of people across the states, across the country also, and it is a good place to be. It is a great school,” he said.

He recalled a memorable experience in his second year when he was unexpectedly summoned to the university’s main auditorium.

“The best experience I had in LASU was when I was in 200 level. I was sleeping in my hostel with my friends when I woke up to news that the faculty was looking for me. The faculty and the VC were actually looking for me,” he said.

Olaleye said he was later presented with a letter informing him that he had received a 50 per cent scholarship and was asked to shake hands with the Vice-Chancellor in front of his friends.

He also explained his study method, saying he gradually builds up his study hours rather than reading for several hours continuously from the outset.

“I do not read six hours at a go. I read two hours, then I increase the tempo until I get to six hours, and I read consecutively,” he said.

Olaleye acknowledged the contribution of his friends to his academic development, saying he benefited from their guidance and support throughout his university journey.

“And I also want to thank my friends who have played a guiding role, because as a person, you need other people to assist you so that you can get where you need to be,” he said.

He described LASU as an institution that provides a balance between academic achievement and social activities.

“LASU is a great place to be, it is a place where academic achievements meet the social activities, it is well balanced,” Olaleye said.

The former best graduating student also described himself as a playful person despite his calm appearance, saying people are often surprised when he tells them about that side of his personality.

“I am a very playful person, and when I tell people I am very playful, they do not believe me. They say I have a serious face, and I am very calm,” he said.

On his plans after graduation, Olaleye said he intends to combine employment with further studies through scholarship opportunities.

“The next step for me is scholarship and work. While I am working, I can follow my studies,” he said.
