The Kogi State Police Command has arrested Jacob Irewa for allegedly attempting to set his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze during a domestic dispute in Felele, Lokoja.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. at Oworo Estate, Felele.

The Police say its B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, responded to a report of the incident and arrested the suspect at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the dispute started after the victim reportedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.

The suspect allegedly threatened her, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and set her ablaze.

Speaking to TVC News, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kogi State Command, ASP Saliu Afusat, said the victim survived the attack and is receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.

The suspect reportedly admitted to the act in his statement to the Police.

The Command says investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and gather further evidence.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, Naziru Kankarofi, condemned the incident and reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence.

He urged members of the public to resolve domestic disputes through lawful means and avoid actions capable of endangering lives.

The Police say the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution upon completion of investigations.
