Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has handed over seven brand-new 30-seater coaster buses to state-owned tertiary institutions to provide shuttle services and ease transportation difficulties faced by students.

The beneficiaries are Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu; Kauran Gwandu College of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, Ambursa; Kebbi State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Jega; Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero; College of Advanced and Legal Studies, Yauri; College of Nursing Sciences, Birnin Kebbi; and Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari.

Commissioning and handing over the vehicles, Governor Idris described the initiative as the fulfilment of a promise to address students’ transportation challenges.

The Governor said his administration had received repeated complaints from students and relevant officials over the lack of mobility in the institutions, prompting the procurement of the buses.

He directed the management and students of the beneficiary institutions to use the vehicles strictly for their intended purpose.

Governor Idris particularly warned school authorities against taking over the buses for administrative purposes, stressing that the vehicles were primarily meant to serve students.

He said, “The authorities should not hijack the buses because the students need them most.”

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, commended Governor Idris for what he described as significant improvements in the state’s tertiary education sector.

Tunga said the administration had constituted governing boards for six state-owned tertiary institutions, with the exception of the Kauran Gwandu College of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, Ambursa.

He added that the Governor had appointed accounting officers, including a Vice Chancellor for the university, as well as Rectors and Provosts for other institutions.

According to him, the Governor had also increased the monthly imprest for all state-owned tertiary institutions to 10 million naira each, from varying amounts previously allocated.

The distribution of the buses is expected to reduce the daily transportation burden on students, improve access to campuses and support smoother academic activities across the institutions.
