The Senate Deputy Minority Whip and Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Dr Rufai Hanga, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Hanga announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the Ward Chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
In the letter, the lawmaker said his resignation took immediate effect.

“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” he wrote.
The senator said his decision followed careful reflection and personal deliberation, explaining that he was withdrawing his membership to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.
“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths,” the letter stated.
Hanga thanked the leadership and members of the party in Dakata Ward for their support during his time in the NDC.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party. I cherish the relationships built and the experiences shared during our political activities together,” he said.
The senator also requested that his name be removed from the party’s register, noting that he had attached his official NDC membership card to the resignation letter.
“Please find attached my official NDC membership card. I request that my name be formally removed from the party register at the ward level,” he wrote.
Following his resignation, Hanga formally joined the APC, ending his membership of the NDC.
He concluded the letter by wishing the party and its members success in their future endeavours.
“I wish the party and its members all the best in their future endeavors,” the letter added.
