The Kano State Ministry of Basic, Secondary and Tertiary Education says the state currently has 875,593 out-of-school children.

The Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, disclosed this while presenting the findings of a four-month survey to stakeholders in the state.

He said the survey, conducted with the support of development partners, covered 1,783 households and 13,915 individuals, including 7,013 children aged between five and 18 years.

According to the findings, 13.4 percent of the children surveyed were out of school, while 86.6 percent were enrolled. The survey also recorded a 54:46 male-to-female ratio.

The commissioner said the latest findings would help the government and its development partners better understand the scale of the challenge and design targeted interventions to improve school enrolment and reduce the number of out-of-school children.

In 2021, the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, MICS, report had put the number of out-of-school children aged five to 12 years in Kano at 989,342.
