The Jigawa State Police Command has announced plans to commence a statewide enforcement operation tagged “Operation Velvet” to curb persistent violations of road traffic laws and improve safety across the state.
The command said the operation will begin on Monday, August 24, 2026, and will be conducted simultaneously across all 27 local government areas of Jigawa State in collaboration with relevant security and traffic management agencies.
According to the command, the exercise is aimed at promoting compliance with traffic regulations, reducing avoidable road crashes and protecting the lives and property of motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
Under the operation, joint enforcement teams comprising police personnel and officers from relevant agencies will intensify patrols, stop-and-check operations and targeted enforcement across major roads, highways, urban centres, markets, motor parks and other locations identified as traffic-prone.

The enforcement will focus on offences including overloading passengers, goods or animals, dangerous and reckless driving, driving against traffic, driving without number plates or valid documents, use of unroadworthy vehicles, traffic obstruction and illegal parking.
Other violations targeted include failure to obey traffic signs and signals, using vehicles in ways that endanger other road users, unauthorised use of tinted glass and other related traffic offences.
The command stressed that the operation was not designed to harass or intimidate law-abiding residents, but to promote discipline, orderliness and responsible use of roads.
“Operation Velvet” will also feature a mobile court to handle traffic violation cases brought before it by the joint enforcement teams. The police said persons arrested for traffic offences would be processed in accordance with the law and prosecuted before the mobile court where necessary.
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, CP Tijjani Murtala, directed personnel participating in the operation to maintain professionalism, civility, fairness and respect for citizens’ fundamental rights.
He also warned police officers and other members of the enforcement teams against extortion, corruption, abuse of power and other forms of unprofessional conduct during the exercise.
The commissioner urged parents, transport unions, commercial drivers, motorcycle and tricycle operators, private motorists and other road users to cooperate with the enforcement teams.
He further advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that all relevant documents are valid and up to date.
The command called on residents to regard “Operation Velvet” as a collective road-safety initiative rather than merely an enforcement exercise, stressing that compliance with traffic laws is essential to preventing avoidable loss of lives and property.
The Jigawa State Police Command said it would continue to work with relevant stakeholders and sister agencies to promote safer roads, enhance public safety and ensure an orderly transportation environment across the state.
