Fire Destroys Sections of Mall in Calabar

A destructive fire outbreak has gutted parts of SPAR Mall in Calabar, Cross River State, destroying shops and valuable goods. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, sending traders, workers and residents into panic.

The fire affected sections housing a pharmacy, clothing outlet, perfumery and phone shop, leaving some traders in tears over the extent of the damage. While the value of goods destroyed is yet to be fully ascertained, losses are feared to run into billions of naira.

Security personnel were deployed to control the crowd and prevent looting, as government officials arrived to assess the situation and coordinate the emergency response.

Firefighters also worked to contain the blaze, while the immediate cause remains unknown as authorities are expected to investigate while the Cross River State Government has commiserated with the affected traders.
