Female Driver Dies In Lagos Crash, LASTMA Warns Against Speeding

A woman has lost her life in a lone road accident at Mongoro, inward Ile-Zik, along a major route in Lagos after her vehicle reportedly veered off the road and crashed into a building.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed the incident in a statement on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the agency, preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB when she lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and ram into a roadside structure.

The impact of the collision killed the driver instantly. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

LASTMA said officers on routine patrol swiftly responded to the scene after receiving reports of the crash.

The officials immediately secured the area by placing traffic safety cones around the accident scene and diverted vehicles to maintain the free flow of traffic and prevent secondary crashes while recovery operations were carried out.

The agency said the accident caused temporary traffic disruption, but normal movement was restored after its officers completed traffic control and evacuation activities.

Police officers attached to the Afonka Police Post under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters also provided security throughout the emergency response and remained at the scene until the operation was concluded.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the fatal crash as another painful reminder of the consequences of excessive speeding and reckless driving.

“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life. Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes and motorists must, at all times, exercise the highest degree of caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel,” he said.

Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on any journey, advising drivers to immediately withdraw any vehicle that develops a fault from the road until necessary repairs have been carried out.

The agency extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the fortitude to bear the loss.
