The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has become one of the Federal Government’s flagship initiatives aimed at expanding access to higher education by providing interest-free loans to eligible students in public tertiary institutions. The scheme covers tuition and other institutional charges, while also offering an optional upkeep loan to help students meet living expenses during their studies.

For first-time applicants, understanding the eligibility requirements, application process and repayment conditions can significantly improve the chances of a successful application. Here are 12 important things every applicant should know:

1. Only students in eligible institutions can apply

NELFUND is available to Nigerian students enrolled in approved public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other government-owned tertiary institutions. Private institution students are currently not eligible for the scheme.

2. You must have a valid admission

Applicants must have secured admission into an eligible institution. Both fresh and returning students can apply, provided their admission records can be verified.

3. Registration is done online

Applications are submitted through the official NELFUND portal. First-time users must create an account using their personal details before proceeding with the loan application.

4. National Identification Number (NIN) is compulsory

Every applicant must possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN), which is used to verify identity during the application process.

5. JAMB details must be accurate

Applicants are required to provide their JAMB registration number, which is cross-checked with official admission records. Any mismatch in details may delay approval.

6. Institutional charges are paid directly to schools

Successful applicants do not receive tuition fees directly. NELFUND pays approved institutional charges straight to the beneficiary’s institution.

7. Upkeep loan is optional

Applicants can decide whether they want to receive a monthly upkeep loan in addition to tuition support. If approved, the upkeep allowance is paid directly into the student’s bank account.

8. The loan attracts no interest

Unlike conventional loans, NELFUND loans are completely interest-free, ensuring beneficiaries only repay the actual amount borrowed.

9. Applicants must complete an attestation

As part of the application, students must confirm they have not been convicted of examination malpractice, forgery or other criminal offences, have not previously obtained a tertiary degree, and are not in default of any previous government education loan.

10. Verification comes before approval

After submission, NELFUND verifies the applicant’s identity, admission status and institutional records before granting approval. Applicants should ensure all submitted information is accurate.

11. Repayment starts after graduation and NYSC

Beneficiaries are not required to repay the loan while in school. Under the Student Loans Act, repayment begins two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), once the beneficiary has secured employment.

12. Beware of fraudsters

NELFUND does not charge applicants any registration or processing fee. Students are advised to apply only through the official portal and avoid individuals or websites requesting payment to facilitate approval.

For first-time applicants, ensuring that personal details, admission records, bank information and supporting documents are accurate is crucial. Any inconsistency may delay verification or affect approval. The Federal Government has repeatedly urged students to rely only on official NELFUND communication channels for updates and application information.
