Enugu is set to host the second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon as organisers begin the final countdown to the 42km elite race and 10km fun run scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026.

The organisers said only seven days remain until the marathon, with thousands of athletes, fans and residents expected to participate in the event across the Coal City.

The race will take runners through parts of Enugu, with the 42km elite marathon scheduled to start at ShopRite on Abakaliki Road and finish at Michael Okpara Square.

The 10km fun run will begin at Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road and also end at Michael Okpara Square.

Ahead of the main event, organisers will hold a five-day Marathon Expo from Monday, August 24, to Friday, August 28, at Michael Okpara Square.

The expo will serve as the official kit collection centre for registered participants while also providing a platform for sponsors, fitness brands, health organisations and fans to engage with the marathon.

According to the organisers, the expo will be open to the public daily from 9am to 6pm.

The event is supported by the Enugu State Government and organised by Nilayo Sports Management as part of efforts to position the state as a destination for sports tourism in West Africa.

Speaking ahead of the marathon, the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management, Yetunde Olopade, said the event would showcase Enugu’s resilience while promoting health, community and sports.

“In 7 days, Enugu will show the world what resilience looks like,” Olopade said.

“This marathon is not just about running 42km. It’s about running for our health, running for our community, and running to put Enugu on the global sports map. We are ready to welcome the world,” she added.

The organisers will also hold the Enugu City International Marathon World Press Conference on Thursday, August 28, where final details on security, logistics and the prize structure for the 42km and 10km categories are expected to be unveiled.

The 42km elite marathon will be flagged off at 6:30am on August 29, while the 10km fun run will begin at 8:30am.

Organisers said preparations were in the final stages as Enugu gets set to welcome athletes and visitors for the second edition of the international marathon.
